Ghanaian political parties issue new campaign restrictions
Ghana's major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have issued strict directives to regulate internal campaign activities.
The NPP has ordered all prospective parliamentary aspirants, their agents, and supporters to immediately cease all campaign activities. General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong stated that premature campaigning, including the mounting of posters, billboards, and organizing rallies, breaches party regulations and creates an uneven playing field. The directive also prohibits the distribution of inducements to delegates and the use of social media to promote individual candidates. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action affecting an aspirant's eligibility to contest.
Simultaneously, the NDC has implemented new restrictions on campaign materials during its internal reorganization. The party's Functional Executive Committee has mandated that all posters and banners must not exceed 5 feet in width by 8 feet in height. Furthermore, promotional materials are restricted to constituency offices, regional offices, and designated election grounds. The NDC emphasized that as the governing party, it must demonstrate modesty and avoid displays of extravagance. Aspirants have been given five days to comply with these new dimensions and location requirements.
