National Hurricane Center monitors Atlantic low-pressure system
The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a disorganized area of low pressure in the eastern Atlantic, located a few hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. The system is producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms and is expected to move north-northwest.
Forecasters have assigned a 20 percent chance of tropical development over the next two to seven days. While the system may bring heavy rainfall to portions of the Cabo Verde Islands, environmental conditions including strong upper-level winds may prevent further development by midweek. Currently, the disturbance is not considered a threat to the United States.
This monitoring follows the recent activity of Hurricane Isaias, which became a post-tropical cyclone near the Tennessee-Kentucky border after making landfall as a Category 2 hurricane in the Florida Panhandle.
