National Identification Authority defends Ghana Card fees

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a clarification regarding the revised fees for Ghana Card registration and related services, stating that the charges were approved by Parliament and not unilaterally imposed. The NIA noted that the fee regime was established under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025, and took effect on February 2, 2026.

According to the Authority, first-time registration remains free for individuals under the age of 25. For those aged 25 and above, a GH¢30 processing fee applies. Other costs include GH¢200 for card replacement, while record updates remain free of charge. The NIA emphasized that these rates apply to its 276 regular district offices nationwide.

The Authority also addressed public confusion regarding its premium service offerings, clarifying that the 24-hour Prestige Centre in Labone, Accra, does not replace or affect the operations of regular registration centers. The debate has shifted from the legality of the fees to concerns regarding the affordability of a card that is essential for banking, telecommunications, and accessing public services.
