Ghana NIA expands 24-hour services and revises fees

The National Identification Authority (NIA) in Ghana has expanded its services through the rollout of over 20 24-hour Prestige Centres. This initiative, announced by NIA Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku, aims to support the government’s 24-hour economy agenda and is expected to create over 120 jobs through private sector partnerships. These centres operate on a three-shift system to provide around-the-clock access to Ghana Card services, including first-time registrations, renewals, and replacements. The first 24-hour centre is located in Accra, with additional facilities scheduled for Kumasi and a new centre in Labone.

Following the implementation of the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025, the NIA has applied a revised fee structure that took effect on February 2, 2026. While the 276 district offices remain the most affordable option—offering free first-time registration for citizens under 25 and a GH¢30 fee for those 25 and older—the Prestige Centres charge premium rates. At these centres, first-time registration and renewals are priced at GH¢610, while card replacements cost GH¢720.

The NIA has defended these charges, clarifying that the fee regime was approved by Parliament rather than unilaterally imposed. The Authority emphasized that the Prestige Centres are entirely optional and do not replace the existing district office network. Despite these clarifications, public debate has shifted toward concerns regarding the affordability of the Ghana Card, which is essential for accessing banking, telecommunications, and various public services.
