National Lung Hospital completes successful lung transplant for 59-year-old patient

A 59-year-old man from Ho Chi Minh City, identified as Đ. Đ. T., has been discharged from the National Lung Hospital following a successful lung transplant. The patient had been suffering from chronic respiratory failure due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a condition that required him to use oxygen 24 hours a day and rely on a ventilator for nearly two years.

On July 18, medical teams performed an eight-hour surgery to transplant lungs donated by a 22-year-old female student. The procedure was supported by a coordinated effort involving the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, E Hospital, University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City Police, and Vietnam Airlines to ensure the rapid transport and preservation of the donor organs.

Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the National Lung Hospital, noted that this was the hospital's 15th lung transplant and marked one of the fastest recoveries recorded. The patient has shown significant improvement and was able to be discharged for outpatient follow-up after approximately one month of stability.
