Organ transplant advancements in Ho Chi Minh City
Overview
Medical facilities in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, have reported significant advancements in transplant surgery.
In late July, the National Lung Hospital completed a successful lung transplant for a 59-year-old patient suffering from chronic respiratory failure. The eight-hour procedure utilized organs donated by a 22-year-old student and involved coordination between multiple medical centers, police, and airlines to ensure organ preservation. The patient was discharged after approximately one month of stability.
Following this, Thong Nhat Hospital performed its first successful living-donor liver transplant on August 22. The recipient, a 50-year-old patient with liver cancer and cirrhosis, received a graft from his brother. This operation, supported by 108 Military Central Hospital, marks the facility's entry into the city’s liver transplant network.
