National Media Research shows rising digital news popularity in Finland

The results of the National Media Research (KMT) indicate a growing popularity of digital newspapers in Finland. The annual study, which involves 23,000 Finns aged 15 and older, tracks how citizens consume newspapers and magazines.

Despite declining populations in certain regions, local publications such as Koillis-Savo and Pitäjäläinen have seen increases in readership. Koillis-Savo reaches 10,000 weekly readers, while Pitäjäläinen reaches 7,100. While print remains the primary format for many, digital usage continues to rise annually.

The research highlights the role of news media in supporting democracy and community engagement. According to Ilona Hannikainen of the News Media Association, diverse information dissemination builds trust and understanding. The study also notes increased engagement from younger demographics regarding local issues, such as school-related developments.
