Indonesia's MBG program faces crisis amid mass food poisoning
The Indonesian government's Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program is facing significant scrutiny following multiple reports of mass food poisoning among students in regions including North Sumatra, Blora, Rembang, Sleman, and Jombang. In one severe case in Berastagi, a student reportedly suffered seizures and memory loss; laboratory tests on food samples revealed the presence of Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli.
In response to these safety concerns, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has temporarily suspended 1,999 nutrition service units (SPPG) across Indonesia. These closures were triggered by the units' failure to register for mandatory Hygiene and Sanitation Feasibility Certificates (SLHS). The affected units are distributed across Sumatra (351), Java and Banten (1,417), and other regions including Bali and Kalimantan (231).
To improve program safety, the BGN has issued new dietary guidelines, specifically banning the use of flavored milk drinks and condensed milk in MBG menus, recommending instead high-quality animal milk such as UHT or pasteurized varieties. Additionally, the Ministry of Human Rights has recommended the establishment of a dedicated victim recovery unit to handle health and social impacts. Despite these corrective measures, Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan admitted that the program's implementation has faced failures, prompting a management overhaul.
