Indonesia refines Makan Bergizi Gratis program and budget

Indonesia is refining its Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program through budget adjustments, regulatory strengthening, and logistical restructuring. The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has adjusted the 2026 budget to Rp229 trillion following efficiency measures. For 2027, a budget of Rp240 trillion is planned, with 97% allocated to food programs and only 3% for operational costs.

To ensure fiscal accountability, BGN has reclaimed approximately Rp311 billion from Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) that had received funds despite not being operational. The agency is also addressing governance by suspending 463 SPPGs due to incomplete profiles and permanently closing seven non-functional units.

Beyond finance, the government is focusing on legal coordination between central and regional authorities to manage cross-sectoral data and licensing. Efforts are also underway to integrate financial reporting systems and involve local farmers, such as those in Gorontalo, to supply fresh produce. Additionally, the Ministry of Health is emphasizing the importance of the first 1,000 days of life to prevent stunting, encouraging fatherly involvement through the 'Ayah Siaga' movement.
