Indonesia's National Nutrition Agency tightens MBG program oversight
Indonesia's National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is intensifying oversight of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program following reports of food safety issues and administrative irregularities. BGN Head Sudaryono reported that approximately 240,000 educational units have yet to receive the service, though the agency is prioritizing expansion into frontier, outermost, and least developed (3T) regions like Papua and Maluku.
To ensure food safety, the BGN has implemented strict validation processes. Recent audits revealed that only 13,761 out of 27,022 nutrition service units (SPPG) passed initial validation. Consequently, 1,999 kitchens have been temporarily closed for failing to secure Hygiene and Sanitation Feasibility Certificates (SLHS), including 46 units in Jember.
Concerns regarding hygiene have been raised following incidents involving contaminated food in various regions. In response, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan warned that legal action will be taken against providers who violate safety standards. The government is also addressing administrative challenges, such as incorrect documentation and improper food storage, to stabilize the program's nationwide rollout.
