National Nutrition Agency head demands resignations following food poisoning incident

The Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Sudaryono, has called for the immediate resignation of any Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) heads unable to meet operational standards following a food poisoning incident in Karo Regency, North Sumatra. An investigation revealed that the poisoning was caused by negligence in processing raw fish, where hundreds of fish were left at room temperature for over 12 hours instead of being stored in freezers.

Sudaryono emphasized a ‘zero tolerance’ policy regarding food safety negligence, stating that those who cannot perform their duties must step down to avoid endangering lives. The BGN plans to tighten food safety procedures across all SPPG kitchens, instructing approximately 27,000 kitchen heads nationwide to maintain strict oversight of every processing stage.

In response to the incident, the Yogyakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD DIY) is urging strict sanctions, including the revocation of operating licenses for SPPGs found responsible for poisoning. Commission D Chair RB Dwi Wahyu noted that evaluations must extend beyond physical kitchen conditions to include raw material quality and processing stages. The DPRD also highlighted concerns regarding SPPGs operating without Hygiene Sanitation Feasibility Certificates (SLHS) and the limited oversight authority of local governments over the centrally managed program.
