Indonesia Nutrition Agency leadership and food safety crisis

Overview

In late July 2026, Indonesia’s Badan Gizi Nasional (BGN) underwent a rapid leadership transition. Head of the agency, Nanik Sudaryati Deyang, announced her resignation via Facebook, citing serious heart-related health issues that required treatment and a second medical opinion abroad. She clarified she was not under investigation despite rumors of corruption linked to the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme, noting she received support from cabinet members and the Attorney General.

President Prabowo Subianto accepted her resignation and appointed Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono as the new chief. Sudaryono, sworn in at the State Palace, pledged transparent, corruption-free management and a ‘zero tolerance’ policy regarding negligence. He emphasized system-based governance and the importance of the MBG programme as a political priority to improve child nutrition and reduce stunting. To ensure continuity, plans were discussed for a supervisory board that might include the former chief, Nanik, in a role that would not involve direct handling of funds.

In August 2026, the agency faced scrutiny following a food poisoning incident in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, where negligence in processing raw fish led to illness. In response, Sudaryono demanded the immediate resignation of any Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) heads unable to meet operational standards. He directed approximately 27,000 kitchen heads nationwide to maintain strict oversight of food safety. Meanwhile, regional representatives in Yogyakarta have urged strict sanctions, including the revocation of operating licenses for responsible units, and raised concerns regarding the oversight of centrally managed programs.
