National Nutrition Agency faces scrutiny over MBG food poisoning incidents

The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is facing intense scrutiny following widespread food poisoning incidents linked to its Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. Reports indicate over 5,400 victims across dozens of incidents since July 2026, with a significant mass poisoning event in Sidoarjo affecting hundreds of students. BGN Head Sudaryono stated that 80% to 90% of these cases stem from violations of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), specifically regarding food storage, temperature control, and consumption time limits.

In response, BGN is undergoing governance reforms and cooperating with law enforcement to investigate potential criminal negligence. Some kitchen service units have already been suspended or shut down. Meanwhile, the BGN has proposed a budget of Rp232.5 trillion for the 2027 program, targeting approximately 72.46 million beneficiaries, within a total budget ceiling of Rp240.2 trillion.

Legislators have called for stricter oversight, including potential criminal sanctions for kitchen managers and better involvement of local governments and BPOM. Additionally, the BGN recently canceled a Rp535 billion LED procurement plan to focus on essential program needs and budget efficiency.
