National Nutrition Agency refocuses Free Nutritious Meal program

The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is refocusing the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program to ensure it targets the most appropriate beneficiaries. Sudaryono, Head of the BGN, stated that hundreds of private elite schools have indicated they do not require the program due to their high tuition costs. The agency confirmed it will not force the program upon these institutions and is currently recalculating the total number of target recipients.

To maintain program sustainability and efficiency, Prof. Hardinsyah of IPB University suggested utilizing local food supplies to keep costs manageable. He estimated that raw material costs could be kept around Rp7,000 per portion by utilizing local rice, eggs, vegetables, fruit, and plant-based proteins like tofu or tempeh. Utilizing local ingredients and shorter supply chains could reduce distribution costs, ensure food freshness, and provide economic opportunities for local farmers, fishermen, and small businesses.
