National Nutrition Agency suspends 1,276 meal service units over hygiene concerns
The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has taken significant disciplinary actions following food poisoning incidents linked to the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. The agency has temporarily suspended 1,276 Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) across Indonesia for failing to meet hygiene and sanitation certification standards. BGN has also proposed the permanent closure of 654 units deemed to be in critical condition.
BGN Head Sudaryono identified the use of spoiled raw ingredients, particularly animal proteins like chicken, eggs, and fish, as a primary cause of recent health issues. To mitigate this, the agency is developing a dedicated digital procurement portal to ensure ingredient freshness and prevent price markups. Additionally, the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has been allocated Rp509 billion to enhance oversight of the program.
In a strategic shift, BGN is removing 1,653 elite and international schools from the program's beneficiary list. This refocusing aims to prioritize resources for underdeveloped (3T) regions, remote areas, and communities with high stunting rates. This restructuring is part of a broader effort to improve governance, transparency, and the overall effectiveness of the national nutrition initiative.
