National Nutrition Agency tightens MBG program oversight after Karo food poisoning

An investigation into a mass food poisoning incident involving the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, has identified negligence in food processing as the likely cause. Sudaryono, head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), reported that approximately 200 to 300 fish were left at room temperature for over 12 hours instead of being stored in freezers.

In response to these safety concerns, the BGN is tightening oversight of all Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG). Sudaryono stated a policy of “zero tolerance” for negligence, noting that approximately 1,300 kitchens have already been permanently closed in the last three weeks for failing to meet safety standards. The agency aims to protect beneficiaries by strictly enforcing food safety protocols and learning from successful units that utilize testing kits to ensure quality.
