National Pedestrian Safety Month launches awareness campaigns

October marks National Pedestrian Safety Month, with various agencies across the United States launching initiatives to reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 7,080 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2024, averaging one death every 74 minutes.

In Georgia, officials launched a campaign in Augusta to remind drivers to obey traffic laws, such as stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks and following the Move Over Law. State officials noted that over 80% of pedestrian deaths in Georgia occur during nighttime or low-light conditions, a concern heightened by the upcoming Halloween season.

In Monroe County, New York, officials hosted the ‘Safe Street Together’ event at Genesee Valley Park to connect residents with traffic safety experts. The county reported 11 pedestrian deaths and 305 injuries in 2024. Local authorities plan to participate in over 15 community events throughout the month to promote awareness and accessibility.
