US National Pedestrian Safety Month awareness

Overview

During National Pedestrian Safety Month in October, various United States agencies and local officials launched awareness campaigns to combat rising pedestrian fatalities and injuries. National data from 2024 indicated 7,080 pedestrian deaths, averaging one death every 74 minutes.

In Kentucky, officials highlighted the specific dangers of nighttime travel. While 76 percent of the state’s 89 pedestrian deaths last year occurred after dark, officials noted that of the 57 deaths recorded so far this year, 40 occurred after dark. Governor Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Rebecca Goodman emphasized that road safety is a “shared responsibility,” urging drivers to avoid distractions and obey speed limits.

Regional efforts included a campaign in Augusta, Georgia, focused on traffic law compliance and the Move Over Law. Georgia officials noted that over 80 percent of their pedestrian deaths also occur during nighttime or low-light conditions. In Monroe County, New York, officials hosted the ‘Safe Street Together’ event to connect residents with experts, following a 2024 report of 11 pedestrian deaths and 305 injuries.

In Colorado, the Department of Transportation reported a significant increase in pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities over the last decade, noting that most deaths occur during dark, dawn, or dusk hours. Risk factors include vehicle speed, impairment, and low-light conditions. To promote safer habits, community initiatives such as ‘Walktober’ have been introduced.

In Delaware, the Office of Highway Safety issued reminders for drivers to exercise caution ahead of Halloween, noting that 17 percent of children aged 14 and younger killed in traffic crashes in 2024 were pedestrians.
