National Police Service outlines protocols for deaths in custody

The National Police Service (NPS) has detailed its investigative and disciplinary procedures following the death of suspects in police custody. According to a statement released on August 13, full investigations will be instituted without delay, guided by the Constitution, relevant legislation, and established protocols.

Following a directive from Inspector General Douglas Kanja, officers on duty during such incidents—specifically the Occurrence Book recorder, cell sentry, and duty officer—are subject to immediate interdiction. The NPS stated that these interdiction measures are intended to promote accountability, prevent the tampering of evidence, and maintain public trust while investigations are ongoing.

If officers are found culpable through these investigations, the NPS committed to taking decisive action through both legal channels and internal disciplinary mechanisms.
