National Public Health Center releases Hungarian hospital infection data

The National Public Health and Pharmaceutical Center (NNGYK) has released detailed data regarding hospital-acquired infections in Hungary. The new interactive dashboard provides data spanning from 2021 to 2025, covering topics such as hospital outbreaks, Clostridium difficile infections, multi-resistant pathogens, and bloodstream infections.

The NNGYK stated that this transparency initiative aims to facilitate professional feedback, institutional self-assessment, and the strengthening of patient safety. The platform includes charts and professional indicators to help the public, healthcare workers, and journalists interpret the data correctly.

Hospital leaders have noted that while the release of data is a positive step, direct comparisons between institutions can be misleading. They emphasized that infection rates are influenced by various factors, including the age and underlying health conditions of the patient population, as well as the frequency and methods of microbiological testing. To effectively combat these infections, experts highlight the need for more specialists, modernized infrastructure, faster diagnostics, and addressing the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance.
