RNI party sees seat decline in Morocco legislative elections

Following the September 23, 2026, legislative elections in Morocco, Mohamed Chaouki, president of the Rassemblement National des Indépendants (RNI), acknowledged a decline in the party's performance compared to 2021. While Chaouki noted that preliminary data showed the RNI leading in several constituencies, including Boulemane, the party ultimately saw its seat count drop from 102 to 66.

Chaouki stated that the party would conduct an internal evaluation of its political, governmental, and organizational experience. He also congratulated the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) for taking the lead in the election results.

Analysts suggest the RNI's loss of over a third of its representation may be linked to the departure of Aziz Akhannouch from the party presidency earlier this year, which created a dissociation between the party leadership and the government. Additionally, internal friction within the governing coalition, specifically between the RNI and PAM, is cited as a factor in the election outcome.
