National Recovery Month highlights addiction recovery and family support

September marks National Recovery Month, a period dedicated to celebrating sobriety, treatment milestones, and the restoration of health. In Mobile, Alabama, individuals are sharing personal accounts of overcoming long-term opioid addiction to highlight the impact of recovery.

This year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has introduced the theme “Recovery Happens Together.” Organizations such as the National Association of Children Affected by Alcoholism (NACoA) emphasize that recovery is a family-wide process. They note that a caregiver's decision to seek help significantly affects children, who may experience a complex range of emotions including relief, hope, or continued fear. Support for these children involves providing safety, honest communication, and the reassurance that they are not responsible for adult problems.
