National Recovery Month initiatives

September initiatives for Recovery Month focus on celebrating addiction recovery and increasing awareness of support services across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

In Liverpool, the City Council’s Public Health team is running a campaign to reduce the stigma associated with addiction, mental wellbeing, gambling, and smoking. Similarly, healthcare providers in Florida are emphasizing the importance of finding purpose through meaningful activities to build resilience. In Alabama, individuals are sharing personal accounts of overcoming opioid addiction to highlight the impact of recovery.

The theme “Recovery Happens Together,” introduced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, underscores that recovery is a family-wide process. The National Association of Children Affected by Alcoholism notes that a caregiver’s recovery significantly impacts children, who may experience emotions ranging from relief to continued fear.

As the month progresses, the focus has expanded to include the intersection of recovery and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. In Fort Frances, Canada, Deputy Mayor Michael Behan proclaimed September 22, 2026, as ‘Fort Frances Battles For Recovery Day’ to show solidarity with those facing mental health challenges.

Research published in Injury Prevention highlights the link between these observances. Analyzing U.S. data from 2000 to 2024, researchers Ian Rockett and Eric Caine noted that while suicide rates rose 37.5 percent and drug poisoning deaths more than tripled, the number of overdose deaths officially recorded as suicides remained low. Rockett estimates that up to 30 percent of overdose deaths classified as accidental or undetermined could actually be suicides, noting that many overdoses result from ‘motivated behaviors’ rather than strict accidents.
