National Testing Agency to re-conduct UGC-NET exams for three subjects

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the re-conduct of the UGC-NET June 2026 examinations for three subjects: English, Commerce, and Sociology. This decision follows an investigation by an expert committee that identified significant errors in the original question papers, including factual inaccuracies, typographical mistakes, translation errors, and the repetition of questions from previous exams.

The re-examinations are scheduled for September 9 and 10, 2026. The English and Commerce papers will be held on September 9, while the Sociology paper is set for September 10. The NTA confirmed that no additional fees will be charged to candidates for these re-tests.

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who described the current examination system as an ‘extraction machine’ that penalizes students for institutional failures. He questioned whether the papers had been leaked and called for greater accountability within the NTA leadership. Simultaneously, the Indian government is initiating a major overhaul of the NTA, including the removal of over 50 staff members and the creation of new leadership roles in technology and security to prevent future lapses.
