National Urban League report says Trump policies worsen Black Americans' prospects
The National Urban League released its annual “State of Black America” report on Thursday, warning that the American Dream is farther from reach for Black Americans than at any point since the Civil Rights Movement. The report blames recent policy changes by President Donald Trump's administration for the decline, citing an overhaul of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, reforms to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act that changes voting rules.
President and CEO Marc Morial said, “While they have targeted and focused on Black Americans, these attacks will impact broadly working Americans, poor Americans, and aspirational middle‑class Americans.” The study includes essays and statements from U.S. Senators Angela Alsobrooks, Lisa Blunt Rochester and Raphael Warnock, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and offers strategy recommendations for civil‑rights groups to counter the administration’s actions.
