NATO foils Russian secret weapon plot near Svalbard
NATO allies, including the United Kingdom, Norway, and the United States, intercepted a covert Russian military operation in the Arctic waters near the Svalbard archipelago this spring. The operation was conducted by Russia’s GUGI undersea warfare directorate, which utilized deep-sea submersibles to simulate the deployment of a sophisticated, secret weapon.
This technology is reportedly designed to disable critical undersea fiber-optic cables without leaving clear evidence of the perpetrator. The targeted area includes two 1,400 km cables connecting Svalbard to mainland Norway, which are vital for global internet connectivity and satellite data transmission for organizations like NASA.
No undersea cables were damaged during the exercise, as the joint NATO operation tracked and confronted the Russian vessels, forcing them to abandon the drill and leave the area. Western intelligence officials expressed concern that the Kremlin may be testing NATO’s Article 5 collective defense commitment through such hybrid sabotage tactics. Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik stated that the operation sent a clear message that Russia cannot operate covertly and that any attempts to target critical infrastructure will be detected and met with consequences.
