NATO bolsters eastern Europe defenses as Russia warns of catastrophe

Poland, Finland and the Baltic states are accelerating construction of border fortifications, deploying barriers, and procuring drones, tanks and other equipment to strengthen their eastern frontiers. The projects include the Suwałki corridor defenses and Poland’s "Eastern Shield" costing an estimated €2.34 billion, while Finland plans to raise defence spending to 5 % of GDP by 2035. These measures follow concerns that the United States may reduce its long‑term security guarantees.

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zacharova urged NATO strategists to “stop and think” before actions push the world toward a catastrophic outcome, warning that the alliance’s current course could heighten the risk of a broader conflict with Russia.
