NATO conducts Arctic exercise on Jan Mayen to monitor Russian submarines

Soldiers from Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States are conducting a military exercise named ‘Operation Atlantic City’ on the uninhabited volcanic island of Jan Mayen in the Arctic Ocean. The maneuver, which began on a Wednesday and is scheduled to run until September 4, aims to demonstrate NATO presence in a strategically sensitive region of the North Atlantic.

The location of Jan Mayen, situated approximately 1,000 kilometers from the Norwegian mainland, is critical for monitoring the routes of the Russian Northern Fleet, particularly its nuclear-powered submarines. The exercise is designed to defend NATO’s northern flank and secure Atlantic supply lines. Vice Admiral Rune Andersen, head of the Norwegian Armed Forces' operational headquarters, noted that these joint actions with allies are intended to strengthen collective capabilities.
