Overview

NATO forces from the United States, United Kingdom, and Norway conducted ‘Operation Atlantic City’ on the volcanic island of Jan Mayen from August 26 to September 4, 2026. Part of the broader ‘Arctic Sentry’ initiative, the exercises aimed to improve operational coordination, shared situational awareness, and collective security in the High North.

The drills were designed to monitor the routes of the Russian Northern Fleet, including its nuclear-powered submarines, to defend NATO’s northern flank. During the exercises, a Royal Air Force Airbus A400M Atlas delivered US Marines, UK Royal Marines, and two Joint Light Tactical Vehicles to the island on August 29, utilizing the single unpaved gravel runway due to the lack of a harbor. The operation integrated multinational sensors, command-and-control nodes, and precision fires, including a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) platoon from the New Hampshire Army National Guard, alongside the Norwegian Home Guard.

A key component involved testing the KONGSBERG StrikeMaster anti-ship missile launch vehicle. This platform, which utilizes the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) Coastal Defence System mounted on a Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle, was tested for its ability to integrate into expeditionary advanced-base operations and sea-denial capabilities within the demanding Arctic environment. UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting stated the operation demonstrates the ability of allied forces to operate together in demanding conditions and signals a commitment to NATO security in the region.
