European defense spending doubles amid rising security concerns

European defense spending is experiencing a significant upward trend, driven largely by the war in Ukraine and uncertainties regarding future US security guarantees. Data indicates that military expenditure across European NATO members has doubled over the past five years.

According to EUISS calculations, defense spending by EU Member States in 2025 was 56% higher than in 2022 when adjusted for inflation. Total military expenditure for European NATO members is reported at 725 billion USD, with Germany leading the surge through a planned allocation of 147 billion USD for military purposes in 2026.

Despite this growth, European governments face challenges in sustaining these levels due to fiscal constraints, high borrowing costs, and competing domestic priorities. Experts suggest that increasing military capacity will require long-term investment in industrial expansion, research and development, and more cooperative spending models to achieve economies of scale.
