NATO allies conduct Arctic exercises on Jan Mayen island

NATO allies from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Norway conducted joint military exercises on the remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen. The maneuvers, known as Operation Atlantic City, took place between August 26 and September 4, 2026, as part of the broader Arctic Sentry initiative to enhance vigilance and deterrence in the High North.

The operation involved the Royal Air Force, Royal Marines, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the Norwegian Home Guard. A key component of the exercise was the deployment of the KONGSBERG StrikeMaster, a mobile anti-ship missile system combining Naval Strike Missiles with a Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle. This deployment tested the system's precision-strike and sea-denial capabilities in extreme Arctic weather and challenging logistical conditions.

Jan Mayen holds significant geostrategic value due to its location north of the Greenland-Iceland-UK (GIUK) Gap, a vital maritime corridor for the defense of northern Europe. UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting stated the operation demonstrates the ability of allied forces to operate together in demanding conditions and signals a commitment to NATO security in the region.
