NATO forces conduct Arctic drills on Jan Mayen

NATO forces from the United States, United Kingdom, and Norway are conducting military exercises on and around Jan Mayen as part of ‘Operation Atlantic City’. The drills, running from August 26 to September 4, are a component of the broader ‘Arctic Sentry’ initiative designed to strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities across the Arctic and the High North.

Led by Joint Force Command Norfolk, the exercises aim to improve operational coordination, shared situational awareness, and collective security in the region. Jan Mayen, a Norwegian volcanic island located approximately 1,000 kilometers from mainland Norway, serves as a strategic location for training in austere environments. The island's position is significant for monitoring maritime routes and protecting Atlantic supply lines.

Norwegian military officials, including Vice Admiral Rune Andersen, stated that the joint operations demonstrate the alliance's capability and will to defend Norwegian territory, including Arctic islands and territorial waters. The High North is increasingly viewed as vital to collective security due to its role in linking North America and Europe.
