NATO reports 250% surge in fighter scrambles over eastern flank amid Russian flights
NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum said that the number of rapid‑response fighter launches, known as Alpha Scrambles, along the alliance’s eastern flank rose by more than 250 % in July 2026 compared with July 2025. The command attributed the increase to repeated flights by Russian military aircraft near NATO airspace that were conducted without filed flight plans or active transponders, forcing NATO pilots to intercept and visually identify the aircraft.
Polish forces were among those responding. Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il‑20 reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea near Łeba, and a Russian Kh‑101 cruise missile later crashed in a field near Lublin, Poland. NATO Secretary‑General Mark Rutte called the missile incident a reckless act by Russia. NATO did not disclose the absolute number of scrambles or a breakdown by individual member states.
