Overview

By early September 2026, regional tensions escalated following repeated Russian aerial provocations. On 3 September, Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft approximately 40 km north of Ustka. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz noted the aircraft was flying with its transponder turned off, creating a “potential hazard for civil aviation.” This marked the tenth interception of an Il-20M by Polish forces this year.

In response to these recurring incidents, the Polish Ministry of National Defence announced plans to expand airspace protection. This includes increasing Polish Air Force activity using F-16 fighter jets and helicopters, strengthening rapid-response systems, and forming the 87th Anti-Aircraft Regiment in Brzesko to defend against missiles, aircraft, and drones.

Simultaneously, NATO has intensified its military posture toward Russia. Following the unannounced aerial operations near Kaliningrad in mid-August, Tomahawk cruise missile launchers were moved to Norway as part of a broader show of readiness. These developments follow the sustained Operation Eastern Sentry and the Namejs-2026 defense exercise in Latvia, which together represent a significant increase in allied surveillance and presence in the Baltic region.
