NATO scrambles Turkish F-16s to intercept Russian aircraft

NATO Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) units were deployed in the Baltic region after multiple Russian military aircraft were detected during air patrols. The intercepted group included a Tu-134 transport aircraft, as well as MiG-31 and Su-30 fighter jets, operating over international airspace in the Gulf of Finland.

Turkish F-16 fighter jets stationed at Amari Air Base in Estonia were scrambled for the mission, supported by Italian Eurofighter jets from Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania. The operation also marked the first joint operational identification mission between the air forces of Finland and Sweden, involving Finnish F-18s and Swedish JAS Gripen jets.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson commented on the heightened security environment, stating that while the Baltic Sea has never been as vulnerable as it is now, it has also never been as well protected.
