NATO and regional aerial interceptions

Overview

On September 25, 2026, multiple aerial incidents involving military aircraft prompted rapid responses from NATO and regional air forces.

In Romania, the Ministry of National Defence detected an aerial target approximately 20 kilometers east of Galați. Two F-16 aircraft were scrambled from Borcea Air Base 86 to monitor the target. While RO-Alert messages were issued to residents in eastern Galați and northern Tulcea, officials stated the target did not enter Romanian airspace.

Simultaneously in the Baltic region, NATO Quick Reaction Alert units intercepted a group of Russian military aircraft, including a Tu-134 transport, MiG-31, and Su-30 fighter jets, operating over international airspace in the Gulf of Finland. Turkish F-16s stationed in Estonia and Italian Eurofighters from Lithuania supported the mission. The operation also featured a joint identification mission between Finnish and Swedish air forces. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson noted that while the Baltic Sea has “never been as vulnerable as it is now,” it has also “never been as well protected.”
