NATO shifts strategic focus toward Europe’s eastern flank

NATO is undergoing a strategic reorientation of its military geography in Europe. While Germany has historically served as the primary center for American military power and logistical infrastructure, the Alliance is increasingly focusing on its eastern flank. This shift, moving focus from the former Fulda Gap to the Suwałki Gap, reflects a recalibration of defensive priorities in response to Russian interventions in Georgia, Crimea, and Ukraine.

In addition to military modernization and increased defense spending, there is a growing emphasis on comprehensive defense models. This approach, being utilized in Poland, moves beyond traditional hard power—such as weapons and soldiers—to include societal resilience. This model integrates civilian institutions, local governments, and ordinary citizens into national preparedness strategies to ensure the country can withstand the disruptions of conflict.
