NATO strengthens presence in Latvia amid drone incursions
Tensions in Latvia have escalated following a drone loaded with explosives, originating from Belarus, violated Latvian airspace. The drone was subsequently shot down by NATO fighter jets, and no injuries were reported. The incident prompted emergency phone alerts in several areas, including Daugavpils, urging citizens to seek shelter due to potential airspace threats.
Colonel David Brassard, the newly appointed commander of the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, described the current security environment as a ‘hybrid’ situation. He noted that three drones have been shot down since he took office in June. These hybrid attacks are characterized as hostilities intended to destabilize the government without constituting formal acts of war.
The ongoing security instability, marked by repeated unmanned aerial vehicle incursions, contributed to the resignation of Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina last May. In response to these threats, a Canadian-led NATO mission is increasing its presence near the borders of Russia and Belarus.
