NATS air traffic control failure causes widespread UK flight cancellations
A major technical failure in the flight processing system of National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has caused widespread disruption across the United Kingdom, resulting in approximately 2,000 flight cancellations over a two-day period. The glitch, which began on Tuesday, impacted 15 major airports, including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, and Edinburgh.
Passengers faced significant delays and chaos at terminals, with some reporting being stuck on aircraft for hours. Airlines such as British Airways, Ryanair, and easyJet were heavily affected. Ryanair reported that over 65,000 passengers were impacted, while British Airways was forced to cancel or divert more than 100 flights.
NATS CEO Martin Rolfe has dismissed the possibility of a cyberattack, stating the issue was a technical malfunction. UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has called for an urgent meeting with Rolfe and ordered a full investigation into the incident. Airlines have expressed frustration, with some calling for the resignation of NATS leadership and a reorganization of the service, citing it as unfit for purpose following previous system failures in recent years.
