A technical failure in the flight data processing system of National Air Traffic Services (NATS) caused widespread disruption to air travel across the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. The cumulative impact of these failures led Ryanair to report more than 1,000 flight cancellations throughout September, citing the two major NATS outages alongside external factors like strikes in Belgium and volcanic ash from Mount Etna. In response to the repeated service failures, Ryanair’s chief operating officer, Neal McMahon, has called for the resignation of NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe. Additionally, UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has summoned NATS chairman Sir Warren East for urgent discussions regarding infrastructure issues, following her order for an independent investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
