NATS technical issue causes UK flight disruptions

A technical connectivity issue at the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) Prestwick centre in Scotland caused widespread flight disruptions across the United Kingdom on Monday, September 21. The incident primarily affected airspace in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, leading to delays and cancellations at major airports including Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, and London Stansted.

Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported that approximately 150 to 200 flights were cancelled due to the disruption. Airlines such as easyJet, British Airways, and Jet2 expressed significant concern, with easyJet questioning the resilience of NATS systems and calling for urgent action to prevent repeated failures. Jet2's CEO emphasized the need for accountability regarding critical national infrastructure.

NATS confirmed that the issue was a connectivity problem and stated it was unrelated to a major software defect earlier in the month that grounded over 2,000 flights. While the technical fault at the Prestwick centre has been resolved, officials warned of residual knock-on delays as operations return to normal. UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander acknowledged the frustration of passengers and noted that the situation is being taken seriously by the government.
