Natura 2000 network faces degradation in Portugal

The Natura 2000 network, which covers approximately 22% of Portugal's continental land area, is facing significant degradation. While these ecosystems provide essential services such as climate regulation, soil protection, pest control, and water purification, much of the network's habitats—including meadows, scrublands, and forests—are currently in an unfavorable state of conservation.

This loss of natural wealth poses risks to various economic sectors, including tourism, agriculture, and forest management. Despite their importance for business models and community well-being, these environmental assets are increasingly threatened by droughts, soil degradation, biodiversity loss, and wildfires. Although protected areas are sometimes perceived as fire risks, they are themselves highly vulnerable to the increasing frequency of such events.
