Natural disasters reported in Huila, Colombia
Colombia is monitoring two distinct natural phenomena in the Huila region. The Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC) reported an increase in seismic activity and energy associated with rock fracturing within the Cerro Machín volcano between September 29 and October 5, 2026. While the number of seismic events and released energy rose compared to the previous week, the magnitudes remained low, with all recorded events below 1.0. These movements were localized within three kilometers of the main dome at depths of two to four kilometers.
Separately, the Huila Departmental Disaster Risk Management Office reported that forest fires have affected 4,024 hectares across 28 municipalities. Significant damage has been concentrated in Aipe, Neiva, Villavieja, and Yaguará. Recent rainfall has begun to mitigate the crisis, reducing the frequency of new fires, particularly in the northern sectors of the department. One major fire in the Moscovia sector of Neiva consumed approximately 216 hectares before being controlled.
