Natural methods to deter spiders from homes during autumn

As autumn approaches, male spiders may increasingly enter homes in search of mates. Arachnologist Dr. Tom Elwood notes that male spiders become active in August, climbing walls and entering through open windows.

Several natural and inexpensive methods can be used to deter spiders from entering a residence. These include placing strong-scented items like lemon or orange peels near entrances, or using scents such as vanilla, lavender, rose, or cinnamon. Other suggested deterrents include using white vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle, or drawing lines with chalk at entry points.
