Nature-based Solutions emerge as key to urban climate resilience

Urban development models are shifting toward Nature-based Solutions (NBS) to combat extreme weather events such as intense rainfall and heatwaves. Unlike traditional 'gray infrastructure' made of concrete, NBS utilizes ecosystems—including reforestation, linear parks, and rain gardens—to reduce flood risks, improve thermal comfort, and preserve biodiversity.

A study by Fundação Grupo Boticário and UNESCO reveals that while 98% of the Brazilian population supports these initiatives when informed, 90% are currently unaware of the NBS concept. Implementation is further hindered by a shortage of professionals trained to integrate engineering, urban planning, and ecology.

In São Paulo, the real estate sector is addressing these climate risks through discussions at the 23rd Secovi-SP Convention. Experts noted that approximately 70% of the city is currently impervious, significantly increasing vulnerability to flooding. The ongoing El Niño phenomenon is expected to contribute to more concentrated and intense rainfall patterns in the region.
