Nature conservation efforts impact land prices in the Netherlands

Efforts to expand nature reserves in the Netherlands, particularly in the Maas Valley, are driving significant changes in land use and agricultural economics. Natuurmonumenten is seeking to acquire a 4-hectare agricultural plot near Ohé en Laak to connect existing nature areas, such as the Dilkensplas and Teggerseplas, to create larger, more resilient habitats for birds and large grazers.

However, these nature development policies have contributed to a dramatic increase in grassland prices. Data indicates that while grassland cost between 16,000 and 18,000 euros per hectare in 1992, prices have risen to over 86,000 euros per hectare due to land withdrawal for conservation and nitrogen policies. This shift has led to concerns regarding land scarcity, the concentration of land ownership among large entities like Natuurmonumenten and Staatsbosbeheer, and the impact on local food production capabilities.
