Starting September 1, businesses in Hungary are required to report data from both paper and computer-generated receipts to the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV). This new mandatory receipt data service aims to provide the tax authority with more detailed information regarding sales.

To facilitate the transition, NAV has announced a grace period from September 1 until December 31. During these four months, the authority will focus on education and practical assistance rather than issuing fines for non-compliance or errors. However, mandatory reporting is officially in effect from September 1, and penalties for failure to comply will begin in January.

Several solutions are available for businesses. The e-cash register application offers an automated way to issue receipts and report data via smartphone. For those continuing to use paper receipts, data can be manually entered through the Cash Register Portal. Larger businesses with high transaction volumes may also utilize machine-to-machine connections for data reporting.
