Hungary tax reforms, EV subsidy and Chinese car market
Entities: BYD · Foton · MG · OMODA · BAIC
Overview
In late May 2026 Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Administration set a June 1 deadline for corporate‑tax (TAO) and small‑business‑tax (KIVA) filings, with penalties for late submission. Finance Minister András Kármán later confirmed the reinstatement of the KATA flat‑rate tax for micro‑enterprises from 1 January 2027, expected to attract 300‑350 000 entrepreneurs.
NAV warned more than 170 000 owners about unpaid vehicle tax on 10 June and offered an interest‑free five‑month instalment plan, taken up by nearly 37 000 participants. The government extended the firm‑focused electric‑vehicle subsidy programme to 30 June, raising the budget and vehicle targets. Final instalment and 2024 global‑minimum‑tax filing deadlines were also set for 30 June, alongside a new EU customs charge on low‑value parcels effective 1 July.
On 5 July officials clarified that the €10 billion transport‑modernisation fund will not launch a new scheme; existing SME electric‑car subsidies under the Recovery Plan can support up to 10 000 vehicles. A market review showed a surge in affordable plug‑in hybrids, eight of the ten cheapest models being Chinese (e.g., BYD Dolphin G DM‑i) with prices from 9.6 million to 14.5 million forints.
On 14 July NAV began notifying more than 62 000 firms that missed the 31 May deadline for publishing 2025 annual reports, offering a 30‑day penalty‑free window and a possible fine of up to 200 000 forints for a second notice.
A new development emerged on 28 July: Chinese manufacturers expanded further in Hungary. Beijing‑based Foton launched seven models—including the fully electric Cavan C1 van (9.99 million HUF) and three electric pickups priced between 12.19 million and 14.89 million HUF—while consumer interest in Chinese passenger cars rose sharply, with inquiries up 77 % YoY and MG, BYD and OMODA leading the surge.
