Navajo Nation flash flooding kills three near Newcomb

Three people, including two adults and one child, died after being swept away by flash flooding near the community of Newcomb in the Navajo Nation, northwestern New Mexico. Tribal police responded to reports of the incident around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, and recovered the bodies at the scene.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren issued a statement expressing condolences to the grieving families and thanked emergency responders for working in hazardous conditions. The incident is currently under investigation by tribal authorities.

The fatalities occurred amid a period of intense monsoon activity and tropical moisture affecting the Four Corners region. The National Weather Service has warned of widespread thunderstorms and record-level moisture for mid-September, with flash flood watches and warnings in effect across parts of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. In Arizona, significant rainfall has triggered water rescues in the Phoenix and Tucson areas.
