Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren expressed condolences to the families and thanked emergency responders for working in hazardous conditions.

As of late September 2026, a significant surge of monsoon moisture continues to pose widespread risks across New Mexico and into West Texas. Multiple Flood Watches remain in effect for the Albuquerque and Santa Fe metro areas, the Middle Rio Grande Valley, the Las Vegas and San Miguel County regions, and the El Paso Borderland. Forecasters warn that rainfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour, with total accumulations reaching up to 6 inches. In response to the threat, local authorities are providing free sandbags at various distribution centers.
